I often use Google streetview images to contextualize maps in a rollover interface. As a standalone set of data, it is also interesting. Here I wrote a custom script to collect streetview images on all the streets in Cambridge MA where I work and visualized each street by color as a pie chart. Despite the numerous and frequent criticisms that have been lodged against pie charts, I find that they are incredibly useful when it comes to qualitative data. A grid of pie charts are intuitive for comparisons, and also aesthetically interesting.
This work with pie charts was exhibited at MIT as a part of the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Prize Exhibition.
