Between 2005 and 2011, I worked on the project “Book from the Ground” as it’s illustrator.
Xu Bing’s “Book from the Ground” is a decade long project to formulate a universal language from found images. Over several years I consolidated everything from ikea diagrams to street signs by redrawing them into visually coherent words, sentences, and eventually a novel. The process taught me visual literacy beyond my traditional art education. Xu Bing’s work, personal philosophies, and especially his intention to discuss communication through recontextualizing familiar imagery were equally formative.
